Hello there and welcome to my site! My name is Grace, or Gracie Karraker because I have a very long middle name that’s never an already selected username (-thanks to my mama who refused to name me after my grandmother because then my name would have been Grace Lynn, which sounds like Graceland, and she doesn’t like Elvis. I, for one, do.). I quite like baking cakes, Bob Dylan, cats, things embroidered with flowers, Seinfeld, and pretending that I can do ballet. Some of these varied interests may or may not show up here. Often times, I can be found at 7:30 a.m. sitting at the long table in Meredith Hall, most likely listening to John Lennon and acting as if I’m working very hard on something. I currently live in Des Moines, Iowa, where I’m a first semester senior studying English and Magazine Journalism at Drake University. After I graduate- if I ever graduate- I’d like to go to grad school for either archival work or art history, and hopefully apply that conglomeration of degrees towards a career in the food world.
I was born in Iowa City, Iowa, grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and fled to somewhere in Southern California for a year. I studied history there. Turns out, I didn’t really like learning about ancient world civilizations, school in general or the sunshine- so, recently (well, within the last two or three years) I’ve returned to my much colder hometown to learn how to become a writer. Particularly a food writer, because I adore food. And that’s what this blog is about. Food (and a few themed mixtapes and a whole lot of Guy Fieri).
As Guy Fieri once said, “Some people are just born to cook and talk.” I think that may be me as well, Mr. Fieri. Although, probably not the talking. I’m a notoriously silent and quiet girl. Growing up, I read my mom’s cookbooks, watched copious amounts of the Food Network, and complied lists of my favorite celebrity chefs and food people (Rick Bayless, Mary Berry, Anthony Bourdain, Gordon Ramsay, and Andrew Zimmern to name a few). It’s no surprise that I’ve found myself here- studying to be a food writer and attempting to do this food blogging thing. So, welcome to my site! I hope I’ll be able to share my adoration for cats, cassette tapes (minus the cassette) and the culinary with you.
